3D Surface Deformation Analysis

3D Surface Deformation Analysis is a research project utilizing close-range photogrammetry to detect and quantify physical changes in an object. By capturing a sponge in both its original and mechanically deformed states using a Samsung A35 5G camera, this project demonstrates the accuracy of terrestrial imaging in deformation monitoring.

The workflow involved processing over 250 images in Agisoft Metashape to generate high-density point clouds and 3D meshes. The analysis revealed significant physical alterations, with the object's volume decreasing from 223 cm³ to 201 cm³ and the surface area shrinking by approximately 8.65 cm².

Cross-sectional analysis further highlighted the impact of deformation, showing a reduction in thickness from 3.38 cm to 1.82 cm in the affected areas. The final 3D models are visualized on the web using a custom viewer, allowing users to interactively compare the 'Original' and 'Deformed' states.
